ICTC is launching a new initiative to support municipalities across Canada to evaluate their progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

ICTC will collaborate with five Canadian municipalities to support the integration of SDGs into their monitoring and evaluation plans, focusing on five SDGs that are critical contributors to Canada’s digital economy:

  • SDG 5: Gender Equality
  • SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities; and
  • SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

This project builds on ICTC’s previous work on Smart Cities—municipalities that use technology to manage resources more efficiently, equitably, and sustainably—which examined the labour market needs of municipalities investing in Smart City frameworks. This new initiative, funded by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), will focus on supporting municipalities to increase their capacity to localize the SDGs, build knowledge and engagement about the SDGs, and create opportunities for communities to share their goals, successes, challenges, and the impacts of SDG localization.

Municipalities play an important role in the digital economy by piloting innovative tools for resource management, digital participation, and urban planning. Canadian cities are spearheading significant projects that make their communities more sustainable and equitable. However, few cities are equipped to translate their ongoing efforts into the language of the Sustainable Development Goals, which were designed for national audiences. Integrating these goals into municipalities’ monitoring and evaluation frameworks can assist Canada in achieving the SDGs by 2030 and enable cities to benchmark their progress against international peers.
