Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming industries across Canada, driving demand for skilled professionals who understand the benefits of AI, and can leverage its potential. However, as AI adoption accelerates, so does the need for a workforce equipped with the necessary skills for successful use and implementation.

A new brief from the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) examines the evolving AI job market, key industry trends and roles, and the skills and technologies needed to succeed and support Canada’s growing AI ecosystem.

Key findings include:

  • AI adoption is accelerating in Canada, but workforce gaps remain. While business leaders recognize AI’s potential, many require support to implement AI strategically.  Addressing the talent shortage is essential for Canadian business growth.
  • Limited access to training is a barrier to AI integration. Many professionals are seeking upskilling opportunities to enhance their ability to work with AI technologies. Building targeted training programs, including online courses and micro-credentials, can help bridge this gap.
  • Strategic collaboration is key to AI workforce readiness. Industry, government, and educators must work together to ensure Canada’s workforce is prepared for an AI-driven future. Investing in talent development now will help drive innovation and economic growth.

ICTC’s new report, Canada’s AI Ecosystem: A Brief Overview of In-Demand Skills and Trends, highlights the importance of fostering a strong AI talent pipeline through education, training, and policy support. As AI continues to reshape the workforce, equipping professionals with the right skills is critical for continued business and economic growth. Addressing these skills gaps will require collaboration between industry, academia, and government to ensure Canadian workers are prepared for the AI-driven economy.
