Calgary, AB, March 27, 2019 — Today, Calgary Economic Development, in partnership with the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC), will release the findings of its Tech and Digital Skills Gap report and launch an online platform for displaced Energy professionals and employers.
Technology is transforming all sectors of the economy, and the potential for talented workers to transition to digital occupations is mutually beneficial for job seekers and businesses. This platform will provide displaced job seekers, particularly those in the energy industry, with detailed knowledge of in-demand jobs and local educational resources for upskilling.
“There is a skills gap that needs to addressed if Calgary wants to take its rightful place in the new economy and lead the industrial transformation,” said Mary Moran, President and CEO, Calgary Economic Development. “This platform aligns with the three “Rs” of our talent strategy - recruit, retrain and retain.”
The digitalization of energy and other sectors is making Calgary companies increasingly big players in big data, blockchain, artificial intelligence and other technologies.
Talent is critical in this environment, which is why it’s one of the four pillars of the economic strategy, Calgary in the New Economy, along with place, innovation and business environment. The goal of the strategy is for Calgary to be the destination for talent in Canada.
Our challenge as a city will be to fill the talent with people possessing the skills required as innovation and unprecedented technological advances create new employment opportunities across all sectors of our economy.
“We are delighted to work with Calgary Economic Development and launch this granular skills mapping exercise and web platform to assist Energy professionals to transition to in-demand tech jobs in Calgary. This is a unique and pivotal initiative for narrowing the skills gap and preparing the workforce for fast growth sectors in Calgary.” Namir Anani, ICTC President and CEO.
