Ottawa, July 17, 2024—ICTC’s latest report, Mapping the Junction of Digital-Green Skills for the Twin Transition: A Competency Framework, explores the specific skills needed at the intersection of the digital and green economies and offers a competency framework for digital-green skills.
Key findings:
- The concept of the “twin transition” (the convergence of digital technologies and environmental solutions), with its attendant “digital-green skills” (the combination of digital skills and green skills), is increasingly considered vital to a prosperous and environmentally secure future.
- A combination of digital skills and green skills are needed for greenhouse gas accounting, environmental consulting, green IT adoption, sustainable software engineering, built infrastructure retrofitting, clean and renewable energy production and management, sustainable design, and many other activities.
- ICTC’s new competency framework creates a standardized and coordinated approach to classifying digital-green skills. The framework:
- Details common digital-green skills and knowledge areas needed for each activity, lists in-demand roles, provides industry case studies, and details transferable digital-green competencies that transcend all activities.
- Clarifies employer demand for digital-green skills and builds awareness of digital-green career pathways and skill requirements among students and early- to mid-career professionals.
- Provides governments, educators, and industry with a standardized way to describe digital-green skills, facilitating their incorporation into educational curricula, work-integrated learning programs, and other training and workforce development initiatives.
As Canada transitions to a net-zero economy, an estimated 3.1 million jobs will be disrupted (about 15% of Canada’s labour force). As many as 46% of new jobs will require an “enhanced skill set” aligned with environmental sustainability knowledge and skills.
