In March of 2019, the Information and Communications Technology Council hosted its first annual ‘Innovation Unplugged’ summit. The event brought together students, educators, industry professionals, and policymakers for an event centred on the future of work and the development of an innovative workforce. Panellists and guest speakers presented on numerous issues related to digital disruption and its associated changing social and economic circumstances. This included an assessment of our country’s workforce development performance on a macro and community level. This report presents a series of recommendations and implementation strategies regarding the future of work for industry, provincial and national institutions in an age of continued digital disruption.
Canada’s Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC), in partnership with Calgary Economic Development and the Alberta Ministry of Labour and Immigration, is pleased to announce the completion of its study, Enabling a Digital Future for Alberta. ICTC forecasts that the demand for core digital jobs in Alberta is expected to reach nearly 9,000 by 2023, with total potential employment in these occupations numbering more than 77,000. These are 77,000 highly skilled and well-paying jobs for Albertans.
By recruiting FinTech ready post-secondary education students, financial institutions can access untapped talent pools to advance their competitive advantage and propel Canada on the world stage in this ecosystem. ICTC is delighted to have launched the FinTech Collaborative this past May and is pleased to have over 40 students taking part in the collaborative.
Haig Tech Support from Earl Haig Secondary School named CyberTitan National Champions. The national competition finals for CyberTitan, a Canadian cybersecurity education initiative delivered by Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC), took place in Ottawa, Ontario on May 14th at KPMG’s LLP downtown location. Ten teams of middle school and high school students from across Canada competed in the second annual CyberTitan National Finals. For this national learning initiative to flourish and grow next year, ICTC is calling for more students and coaches to enroll, technical mentors to help facilitate the program across Canada, and sponsors and supporters to help position Canada as a leader within the global context of this competition. The Information and Communications Technology Council is pleased to announce the release of its report: Developing Cyber Talent for Canadian Critical Infrastructure – Road Transportation. Funded by Transport Canada, this report examines the demand for cybersecurity talent for Canadian road authorities. The study analyzes critical skillsets while highlighting the need for a comprehensive approach to addressing challenges related to talent acquisition and skill development within the road transportation sector.
The Prime Minister awarded sixty-nine of Canada’s most inspiring and innovative educators with the country’s highest honours for Teaching Excellence, Teaching Excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and Excellence in Early Childhood Education.
Mona Fortier, Member of Parliament for Ottawa-Vanier, on behalf of the Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister of International Development and Minister for Women and Gender Equality, announced federal funding of over $2.77 million for seven projects that will improve economic security for women in Ottawa. ICTC is one of the more than 45 approved under the Women’s Program in two calls for proposals entitled, Support for Women’s Economic Security and Addressing the Economic Security and Prosperity of Indigenous Women.
The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, along with the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, highlighted the Government’s investment of over $1.7 million in the Information and Communications Technology Council’s CareerConnect program. This investment supports over 120 youth in Barrie, Peterborough, the St. Catharines-Niagara region, Toronto, Greater Sudbury, the Ottawa area and Windsor gain employment experience and skills related to their fields of study and career goals in order to make a successful transition into the labour market.
Gaining practical, and on the job, experience is a crucial component for success for post-secondary education students studying in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and business. The opportunity to work in an industry setting also helps students align technical, foundational and work-ready skills that Canadian employers need.
